The Stepping Stone Ponds project aims to create widlife ponds in urban areas providing much needed oases of biodiverity for our native flora and fauna. Creating a pond is one of the best things we can do for our environment and is a great way to entice more wildlife visitors to schools, gardens and other urban spaces.

School and garden ponds are vital for wildlife. They act as stepping stones in areas that have lost other areas of water in the landscape and can be very useful for native species such as frogs and newts, providing links within an increasingly fragmented habitat.” (Rob Gandola – Science Officer Herpetological Society of Ireland)

The Stepping Stone Ponds project is a companion to the Stepping Stone Forests© programme that is currently being rolled out across Dublin, Louth, Meath and Wicklow. Ponds and forests are complementary habitats and the ultimate target is to create both habitats in all participating sites.
